CEX.IO 2017 Review – Why Reddit Users are Complaining About this Bitcoin Exchange?

July 2017 Update: Recently I’ve been noticing an increase of users complaining about CEX.io. I suggest reading the reviews I’ve mentioned in this post and the comments in the comment section and judging for yourself. I’ve had several people asking me to remove this review, however from my personal experience I’ve never had an issues with the exchange. In any case, trade with caution.

CEX.io is one of the oldest Bitcoin exchanges around. It started out in 2013 in London as a Bitcoin exchange and cloud mining provider. At some point its mining pool, known as Ghash.io, was so big it held 42% of the total network mining power.

However, on January 2015 the cloud mining operations were closed and today CEX.io operates solely as a Bitcoin exchange. CEX.io is registered with FINCEN and It applies KYC (know your customer) and AML (anti money laundering) policies. This means you’ll need to verify your identity before you will be able to buy Bitcoins via the exchange.

CEX.io allows you to buy Bitcoins using your credit card, a wire transfer or a SEPA transfer (if you live in the EU).  However CEX.io transactions work a bit differentl than other Bitcoin exchanges, they are based on Fill-or-Kill orders (also known as FOK).

FOK orders are orders that are executed immediately and in full. So whatever you “agreed” to pay or get, that’s exactly what will happen. This is different than how other exchanges work where you may encounter liquidity issues. So for example, if you but 2 Bitcoins at an agreed rate on CEX.io you will definitely receive that amount, however if you but 2 Bitcoins on Bitstamp you will need to wait until someone who’s willing to sell you those Bitcoins at your requested price comes along.

However, for this to work 100% CEX.io has to charge customers a premium so that they will always be able to fulfill their orders, hence the higher exchange rate.

How does CEX.io work?

CEX.IO has a very clear explanation on their site about how this service works, here’s a summary of it:

When you enter a trade, CEX.io calculates the price and freezes it for 120 seconds.  You input the amount of money you wish to spend and you see the amount of Bitcoins you can receive. After you press the Buy/Sell Button, the system checks to see that you have enough funds available.

If the situation on the market allows the execution of your order on conditions not worse than you agreed on, the order will be filled (The order can also be filled on more favourable conditions). If there is a sudden spike in the exchange rate — preventing the execution of the order on the agreed conditions — you will be notified. After you confirm the trade, your order is matched to other orders on the exchange, and your balance is adjusted — sometimes the amount can be even greater than agreed on, but is never smaller.

CEX.io fees and charges

One of the biggest complaints users have about CEX.io is the amount of fees and “hidden charges” they take. CEX.io takes a 7% fee for the service which is charged from the amount of fiat currency you pay. So if you buy $1000 worth of Bitcoins you’ll get only $930 worth. This means that the high exchange rate you see on CEX.io already includes the service fee within it, and no other fees will apply.

However the fee stated above is only relevant if you want to do a direct purchase with CEX.io. The exchange also supplies trading services in which different fees will apply. In order to trade you’ll need to fund your CEX.io account with either a bank account (no commission on CEX.io’s part) or a credit card (3.5% + $0.25 commission). Also, once entering a trade you will need to pay up to a %0.2 transaction fee depending on your part in the trade.

CEX.io Buying Limits

There are four different account limits on CEX.io – Basic, Verified, Verified Plus and Corporate.

Basic accounts can buy up to $500 worth of Bitcoins per day and $2000 worth of Bitcoins a month.

Verified accounts can buy up to $10,000 worth of Bitcoins per day and $100,000 worth of Bitcoins a month.

Verified plus and Corporate accounts have no limitations on the amount of Bitcoins that can be bought.

In order to become verified you’ll need to supply a government issued id and personal information about yourself.

Customer support and user reviews

Perhaps one of the most controversial issues about CEX.io is the user reviews it gets online. TrustPilot  gives CEX.io an average rating of 3.9 out of 10 stars. Reddit also had a very short and worried review about the exchange. However most people don’t actually read the detailed reviews they just look at the ratings, so I decided to do just that.

It seems that the majority of dissatisfied user reviews are either complaining about the hidden fees (i.e. high exchange rate), the identity verification process or the site’s customer support. The first two issues are usually related to people not understanding the fine print, and CEX.io has made it much clearer in the past few months how much will you pay for your coins. As can be seen below:

Regarding support I ran a test. I clicked on the “help” icon that’s available on each page of the site and wanted to see how fast I can get a response. The support rep answered within 20 seconds and gave me a pretty detailed response (even though it was a canned response). So personally I was pretty happy with that.

Most of the bad reviews that were on TrustPilot also received a response from CEX.io so it’s good to see that the company cares about its reputation. And finally, the short reddit review I read didn’t shed any new light on the exchange. Most people on Reddit said they didn’t have any issues with it, and the original poster just didn’t understand the identity verification process.

Conclusion – Is CEX.io a Good choice?

Until today I have used CEX.io several times and haven’t had any issues. I think it’s a solid exchange, with the only downside being the 7% fee they charge for buying Bitcoins. In the past year or so the exchange has leap frogged froward and has become on of the leading Bitcoin brokers around. The user interface is very intuitive and even complete newbies will manage to buy Bitcoins with it. As long as you are aware of the fees and the verification process needed to buy more substantial amounts of Bitcoin you’re good to go.

          2. Extremely frustrated with this exchange. They essentially froze my assets as soon as I deposited.

            cex.io claims to allow deposited BCH to be traded after 3 confirmations, but the exchange seems to just hold it indefinitely while displaying a “pending transaction” message. This has happened to a number of people and I’m personally loosing quite a bit of money because of this.

            This company is taking way too long. I was a customer there for 4 months, was verified and had my card verified as well. I have not used them for 2 months, and now the card I use to use has expired, so I tried to enter my new card 6 days ago, and it is still pending. I have sent many emails to them, only to get back a auto message to be patience. What bothers me most of all is someone I know just signed up to their site for the first time 2 days ago, and within a hour he was verified and his card as well and making purchases, yet I have been a customer there for months and have done many successful transfers and I am waiting almost a week for my new card to get approved. I have since found another site, I will not use CEX.IO again due to lack of communication and delays.

            On more than one occasion I have had margin trades automatically close for no reason. As a result I have made losses including the fees which CEX charges.

            I have opened a ticket with CEX but they’re silent about the issue. I have lost my faith in CEX and do not advise anyone to sign-up until their processes become transparent and support gets back to you timeously with results.

            The withdrawals last forever to be completed and then they say that the bank is to blame. The last withdrawal was deposited my account on the site instead of my bank account after more than 15 days. And the compliance team is playing dumb. Helpless… Anyway I transformed my fiat funds into bitcoin and transfered them to another exchange site. I do not trust this review one bit.

          7. August 2nd. They made the statement that their users would get their BCC/BCH for BTC that was held in their accounts at that time.

            Seems to me that they decided to perform the fork and keep the newly created funds. I was a loyal and happy customer up until this outright deception and theft.

            I have the same issue as a lot of other people here: wired transfer takes more than a month for some reason and I can’t get any answer from the support., beside the automatic ones. At this point I’m not sure if I even going to ever get my money back.

          9. I also did wire per SEPA € 1000 on 30th of June, till now, no info whatsoever. Many support tickets, low reply rate, just some pre-written replies. I really start to wonder my self, if still legit.

            With Kraken, deposit went well and fast, but now, got informed, that it will take 72h when I can withdraw to my wallet first. I am pretty sure, that this has to change, otherwise, crypt currency exchanges are done.

                  Same here. Over a month ago I made a deposit of $10,000 USD worth of bitcoin and it still doesn’t show up in the account. And on the times that the support replied to me, they have been rude! Their only explanation is

                  “As we mentioned before that the verification may take some time.
                  As soon as our Compliance will verify your funds it will be credited on your account immediately.”

                  I asked them to wire the money back. I’m wondering if they are using the deposits to fund their operations, and if you think about it most people will not bother them many times. I have no faith exchange anymore.

                • I can confirm this… I try for about half a year to get my money from cex.io and since it it is slightly under the minimal amount for wire transfer, (which is 250 US$ min.! Where they charge 50 $ commission for themselves!!) I have to use other withdrawal services…. So far NONE of the other withdrawal services worked…. even worse: trying to withrdraw it to my CC account resulted in a fraud protection case from my cc company which voided my cc….. I try some other types of withdrawal the next weeks but, if I get my money back or not, I’ll never do anything agarin with cex.io…

            Sorry to see negative comments, especially when you hold the opposite opinion. I started using cex.io almost a year ago just to try yet another exchange. I was actually trading on multiple exchanges, and still am. As a rule their rate is the highest among the exchanges, so it’s a perfect match, when selling btc and eth.
            Their compliance procedures are really strict. Probably this is the reason why some users face difficulty with withdrawal. But I am sure this withdrawal issue is temporary, and they will solve it soon.

            Nice review. Good to see that you outlined both advantages and disadvantages. I used Cex.io myself and had mostly positive experience. It took a bit long to verify, but I am OK with that. At least I know they care about security.

            I am quite certain that CEX is not a scam, but the below situation still keeps me worried for over 2 weeks now:

            All SEPA withdrawals before and after the 10,000 EUR withdrawal on 19 June were processed almost instantly and credited within 1-2 business days to the bank account.
            However, the withdrawal in question got stuck as PENDING, meaning it has not been processed internally by CEX.
            I thought it might be some bug connected to the timing (I requested it on a Sunday night) and was waiting for CEX to address the issue. I warned other traders not to do withdrawals outside business hours.
            Later on, a friend did a withdrawal for same 10,000 EUR amount within business hours and it got stuck as PENDING too. Seems like there is a certain threshold where withdrawals are sent to manual processing or something – the timing wasn’t at fault. Which does not make much sense, since I have been verified, and given the 10,000 EUR daily limit.
            Still, it would be all fine, if the payment didn’t get stuck for over 2 weeks without any comments/replies from support. I understand the company is overwhelmed by support tickets, but 2 weeks is certainly not serious wait time (and still ticking).
            most interesting is that subsequent withdrawals for smaller amounts have gone through fine.

            Both my friend and I decided to address CEX via FB message to their public profile. I was 1st to write, and fully ignored. My friend wrote 10 minutes after and was given a reply that his payment has been stuck for just a day and it’s ok. Clearly they are filtering the queries easier to address – as answering to me why the withdrawal has been stuck as pending for 2 weeks is harder.

            Since it seems that CEX is quite responsive in this thread, asking for ticket IDs and user IDs, let me try my luck:

              Update: while the comment was in moderation still, CEX finally got back to me.
              So far they are explaining the situation as additional AML /source of funds review.
              But it’s still weird that other payments are going through fine. And no AML questions about this payment have been asked.

          15. READ BEFORE USING THEM!

            I had before good experience with CEX.IO, and everything was ok until 1 month ago on my SEPA withdrawal.

            They stopped answering and claiming everything will be solved. After much insistence on my side, after 15 days they asked me for documents to justify the sources of my funding. They made me fill a document will my personal data, my wages, where I work, my social networks, others.

            I filled the same on the very same day. Until now I got no response to my multiple emails. I even asked them if they need any other document. Silence was what I got (10 days ago)!

            It’s strange, that when the questions to support are others than withdrawal, they reply in a few hours. So, they are clearly avoiding to answer to these subjects.

            CEX.IO, if you’re reading this, it’s my last resource before going into legal on your operation country and joining all the other users that are complaining. I kindly request that you solve my problem.

            [UPDATE] – This process started in end of May, with me withdrawing amounts of ~12k EUR. My account was previously certified.

            [UPDATE] – 25 Jun – CEX.IO – Closed / merged some tickets. Not very important to me, but this clearly improves the support metrics on open subjects.

            [UPDATE] – 26 Jun – CEX.IO – Rejected all my withdrawals with no information why. Now they reseted the process.

            [UPDATE] – 26 Jun – CEX.IO, requested even more details. Personal opinion, it seams like they’re finding excuses to postpone the withdrawal as they had previously all the information

            [UPDATE] – 29 Jun – CEX.IO, replied with their traditional message “that they have personally requested the compliance department,….”

            [UPDATE] – 29 Jun – CEX.IO, Asked again documents I’ve previously shared. I’m almost sure they will ask again any other document (even any other I might already have sent).

            [UPDATE] – 3 July – Official. I have the ticket open for 1 month. Always a different excuse in a never ending asking of information. So far I have provided, a real copy of my bank statements, my work details, all my email addresses, my wage, any sources of income, details and transactions on other exchanges. Now they started to ask information they have asked before saying that they could not find the details in the documents.

            From Jun 26, that I don’t have any other contact from CEX.IO. I believe they run out of excuses or they are trying to find something new to request me. They haven’t even replied to my trust pilot previous feedback.

              I have same issues with wire transfer withdrawal from CEX.IO. My withdrawals from 15 June 2017 and 16 June 2017 are not yet arrived to my bank account. CEX.IO requested all documents above mentioned in WOOBA comments, very personal details, … But today 04 July 2017 and money are not arrived yet to my bank account !

                  The country of my bank is not in the lists of not allowed countries. I have Support ticket with CEX.IO about my USD withdrawal , where they only keeping promises that the withdrawal is in process, or that there is backlog of too many requests and I need to wait. But all this is s*it!!! Bank transfer takes about 5 days, and I’m waiting already one month with no any information where is my money now and when money will arrive to my bank account.                 I am no longer sure about this. I have started the withdrawl process too. First, I tried to validate my credit card for transfer. It is stuck pending approval. This has been a week now. I tried two different cards just to be safe, but no response from support has been given as to why they have not been approved. Then I have tried to do a direct transfer to my bank account. The drop down list of countries in the request, does not include the United States. I wonder why. I am indeed worried and am beginning to lose trust in the site.

            Total scam!

            I verified my account, my master-card and visa. I sold BIT coins for USD to withdraw some cash. And my withdraws keep getting rejected without explanation both to Master-card and VISA so i had to BUY bitcoins again and send them to my wallet to withdraw it on another market… needless to say i lost a lot of money in process of buying USD then selling it again for BIT coin….

            Worst exchange on face of this planet. I am lucky my account was never verified and they did not go the opportunity to steal my money. The article says CEX.io is a good choice but surely they themselves have written this article or paid for it. As you can see in comments section many have lost money to them and I was just saved because they though I am a poor scum because I did not belong to a first class country and hence ignored my account and service requests.

              • Well maybe you should update the review based on the feedback you’re getting. Like say a big bold paragraph at the top stating that they are stealing money.

                Otherwise someone visiting quickly might see your 8.1 rating on them and become a victim based on your recommendation.

It’s been over two weeks now and still no word. I am realizing slowly that this company is a scam…you cannot have that bad of customer service.             I initially had a positive experience with them. However, in the past few days their customer service/chat has been non-existent. Two of my transactions disappeared completely and I’ve gotten no response to my emails and messages. Would not recommend.

            Also, their site is also non-intuitive and hard to use for beginners.

              CEX.io will not return my funds. They have jerked me around for weeks. Personally, I think they have financial problems – that or the worst customer support in the universe. I would urge people to STAY AWAY FROM THEM

            the csv export is total bullshit. when the comment says “Sell order #XXXX” there is no way to get the exchange rate/price for that order. so if you want to stay compliant with your taxes you need manually browse the orders on cex.io. last time when I tried it the web frontend for that function was broke!!!! I’ll never trade there again.

              Totally agree. You cant even widthraw your money to the credit card. They tell you call Visa ????. As of being the most expensive exchange out there. That’s correct! Just withdraw your money via the cryptocurrency and get to any otger exchange. I would not even recommend any other exchange. Just pick a random one and you ll already be better off than Cex.io.

            The worst exchange and business I have ever dealt with.
            Fess are about 3x as much as other exchanges, I was OK with this as long as it works.
            I have been trying to withdraw money for a week.
            My bank considers them an illegal entity, and rejected payments from them, now I have to take 3 more pictures of my personal information, then wait another 3 days for verification.
            Customer service is garbage, its rare they send even 1 email a day.
            I wish I never trusted these bastards.

            I use CEX.io unfortunately for me its the only option i have to buy bitcoins.. and since you need bitcoins to get other cryptos… that’s my only option.

            Excellent review, I think 7% is too much if you make many transactions. Also, when I click on your link to see the website, no https is implemented on the site, crucial to have SSL when you buy with a credit card.
