Tangem Wallet is one of several successful hardware crypto wallets on the market, but also one that separates itself from the pack with its unique no-device system and card-shaped design that utilizes NFC technology.

It’s low-cost, pairs itself with a dedicated app, and supports the storage of over 6,000 cryptocurrencies.

But is that all this wallet offers? Is it safe and user-friendly despite the different design? Join me as I explore this and other important details in my comprehensive Tangem Wallet review.

1. What Is Tangem Hardware Wallet, and Why Do You Need One?

Tangem Wallet is a hardware crypto wallet that allows users to store, buy, sell, swap, transfer, and stake thousands of coins and tokens.

A key focus of its design is security and ease of use — unlike other hardware wallets, it doesn’t require recovery phrases and uses stronger security features like concealed private key generation.

It boasts a simple credit card design with NFC technology, the same that’s used in bank cards. This enables the wallet to connect seamlessly with the official app, simplifying usage. More importantly, it eliminates the need to use traditional recovery phrases.

The same is true for the Tangem Ring, another hardware wallet Tangem makes. It effectively has the same functionalities and NFC support as the smart card wallet but comes with a unique design, which makes it the world’s first ring-shaped hardware wallet. You can get both the cards and the rings and let the cards act as backups.

I have to admit, I was skeptical at first, as it seems counterintuitive for something so simple to be both secure and user-friendly, but it actually is.

As you’ll later see in the rest of my Tangem Wallet review, the wallet is incredibly safe as it barely has any vulnerable points that hackers might exploit. There’s hardly any software that can be exploited, in fact.

Moreover, the lack of recovery phrases makes it easy to set up, while the entirety of what you’ll do with the wallet is effectively within the app, which functions just like any other hardware wallet app.

What’s In the Box?

The Tangem card wallet pack comes in a nifty pull-out box, which was fun to open (you’ll know what I mean if you get one).

Inside, are your Tangem wallet cards (two or three card, depending on how many you ordered), along with a small get-started leaflet, which also contains the terms of service.

That’s basically it! Since the device has no power source, there is no need for any chagrin cables or batteries.

The cards are both highly secure and durable – according to Tangem, they are rated at the same level of chip protection used in passports, a rating known as “EAL6+”. They also claim the cards are dust-proof, waterproof, and should last for over 25 years in temperatures between -25℃ (-13.℉) and +55℃ (131℉).

2. Tangem Team Overview

Tangem is a high-tech, blockchain-oriented company based in Zug, Switzerland. It was founded in 2017 and boasts branches worldwide, more specifically in the Asia-Pacific region, Eastern Europe, and North America.

The company’s founder and CEO is Andrey Kurennykh, a Russian-born Swiss with more than two decades worth of experience in Technologies and Management. Other members of the team include Andrey Lazutkin (CTO), Evgeniya Govor (COO), and Alexa Kupashova (CFO), among others.

The company’s goal from the outset was to develop and promote a unique form of hardware crypto wallet that combines a smartcard-based wallet and a mobile app.

Tangem cards use software that allows them to securely store private keys and connect to a robust app that makes usage simple, even for the most inexperienced crypto users.

Since 2018, Tangem has created over 2 million wallets. It still has a perfect track record, as there’s no information that any of these have ever been hacked. The Tangem secure crypto wallet is the company’s flagship product. The brand also came out with Tangem Ring, the world’s first ring-shaped hardware crypto wallet.

3. Tangem Wallet — Supported Coins

Tangem Wallet is ideal if you’re looking for a hardware wallet that offers extensive coin support. It effectively lets you store over 6,000 coins and tokens while the wallet supports 70 networks.

At the moment, NFTs are not natively supported, but there’s a good chance that the company will change that for the better in the near future. On the other hand, you can still manage your NFTs through marketplaces by accessing them through Tangem’s WalletConnect integration.

4. How to Set Up Your Tangem Hardware Crypto Wallet

Once you buy a Tangem Wallet, you’ll receive a box with two or three Tangem cards (depending on the option you’ve purchased) and a simple leaflet on how to get started. The cards are not functional at first, as they don’t have a private key.

It’s important to understand that the following steps can be done using one of two methods. You can set up your wallet with or without a seed phrase.

The recommended way is without because seed phrases can be easily lost, which is why Tangem considers this standard method of setting up a hardware wallet unsafe.

We’ll go with the company’s recommendation and cover the steps of configuring your wallet without a seed phrase (bear in mind that you need an NFC-enabled smartphone):

1. Tap the first card to the NFC module on the phone. You’ll get a link to download the official Tangem app.
2. Download and install the app.
3. Open the app and tap the Scan button.

4. Select Create Wallet and scan the card again in the same manner. The wallet will generate public and private keys on the secure chip, so they’ll never leave the cards, nor will they be found on Tangem servers.

5. The app will now prompt you to create a backup, which is highly recommended. For this, you’ll use the remaining one or two cards from your box. Tap Add a Backup Card and scan the card to create a backup. Repeat the process if you have another card.

6. Once you’ve finalized the backup process, you’ll get to create your Tangem app code. This access code can be a number, word, phrase, or anything else you want. Tap Submit once you’ve generated it.

7. The app will prompt you to scan the initial card. If you have backups, it will do the same for the rest. The scans can take a bit of time, around 15 seconds in most cases.

8. You’ll get another message telling you the wallet card has been successfully configured. Tap Continue to My Wallet to start using it.

5. How Much Does a Tangem Wallet Cost?

Tangem Wallet’s base price is $54.90 for the cheaper option with two cards. If you want to get the 3-card set, you’ll have to pay $69.90.

The prices don’t include taxes and shipping. However, the latter is zero if you order over $100 worth of wallets. You can use standard payment methods like Visa or MasterCard, PayPal, or crypto.

6. Where to Buy the Tangem Hardware Wallet?

You can buy the only hardware wallet Tangem sells straight from the official website. The company has a simple-to-use online store where you can pick the number of cards per set and the wallet’s design.

Tangem delivers to over 170 countries, while the few notable exceptions are Iran, Russia, Venezuela, Lebanon, Myanmar, and Belarus.

You can also purchase the wallet from official resellers and retailers, such as Amazon in the US and Canada.

7. Can Tangem Wallet Be Hacked?

Looking at the spotless track record Tangem has, it seems that its wallet is incredibly secure. Though nothing is impossible, issues are largely improbable because the wallet has very few vulnerability points, thanks to the way it was designed.

The main safety aspect of the wallet is the secure chip technology. Tangem relies on an EAL6+ certified chip, which is the highest available level of protection and is also used on bank cards and passports.

On top of that, the chip is resistant to things like water, dust, temperatures as low as -25° and as high as 50° Celsius, electromagnetic pulses, and X-rays.

In other words, Tangem Wallet breaks are not a common sight.

All of this is verified by third parties, namely the Swiss company Kudelski Security, which audited Tangem Wallet in 2018, and the international security lab Riscure, which performed its audit in 2023.

To protect you from counterfeits, the Tangem app will always verify both the chip and the firmware every time it connects.

Being a card, there’s no need to charge it, so you don’t have to worry about that potential vulnerability point, either. Plus, that way, you can always keep it on you.

Once you get your wallet and start the setup process, a private key not even known to Tangem is generated using the True Random Number Generator (TRNG). The key is located within the secure chip, and there’s no way to view it since the card doesn’t have a screen.

The only real risk here is losing a card. However, you always have at least one backup card, which is why it’s recommended to activate it immediately while setting up the wallet for the first time. If you lose both backups, it’s best to transfer assets to another wallet.

It’s worth noting that the Tangem app is not a vulnerability point, though it’s connected to the internet. It is just a conduit, and you don’t sign transactions online but via NFC communication.

While NFC can otherwise be hacked, this is not the case with Tangem. You still need both your Tangem card and app to conduct transactions. Also, you must use your password.

All in all, thanks to these security features and design choices, the only way for a hacker to get access to your funds is to gain possession of both the card and your phone with the app, which is highly unlikely.

8. Is Tangem the Best Hardware Wallet on the Market?

In my opinion, Tangem Wallet is certainly one of the best hardware wallets, as it earned a spot to stand proudly amongst industry moguls that are Ledger and Trezor.

The two most popular options on the market are still more popular, but the fact that the Tangem Wallet has crept so close to them is no small feat. The security of the two is not higher than Tangem, and their main advantage is the screen that you can use to show off your NFTs, for example.

Tangem, on the other hand, is clearly a more stylish option, especially if you opt for the ring or both the cards and the ring, which is also great if you want a good backup.

However, the main advantage of Tangem is the combination of a relatively lower price tag compared to the other options and the unique no-hassle system that doesn’t rely on complex devices.

If you like the card or the ring design, the fact that you can set up and use the wallet without a seed phrase, and a stylish small device you can take with you anywhere with ease, then Tangem Wallet is definitely the best option for you.

But if you’re looking for a traditional hardware wallet with a screen and the option to connect to either a desktop computer or a phone, then solutions like Trezor or Ledger are better.

10. Conclusion — Is Tangem Wallet Worth It?
