Standard Chartered favors Bitcoin over Tesla in 2025 as TSLA crashes. Elon Musk faces a political storm in the United States as Tesla protests increase. BTC Bull token presale hits $4.1M—is it the best crypto to buy now?
A recent analysis by Geoffrey Kendrick, Global Head of Digital Assets Research at Standard Chartered, paints Bitcoin—the world’s most valuable cryptocurrency—as a superior investment over the Tesla stock.
The idea of swapping Tesla stock for Bitcoin comes as Tesla faces headwinds while Bitcoin is gaining more legitimacy as an institutional asset.
Standard Chartered: Bitcoin vs. Tesla Investment
In his research, Kendrick proposed a hypothetical “Mag 7B” index in which Bitcoin replaces Tesla in the “Magnificent 7” lineup, traditionally comprising top stocks like Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Tesla.
When Bitcoin replaced Tesla and the index backtested from December 2017, it yielded higher returns. At the same time, volatility fell by nearly 2%, making it more stable.
Additionally, the index posts a better risk-adjusted performance, with an information ratio of 1.13 versus 1.04 for the traditional Mag 7.
Several reasons could explain this outcome.
Since 2017, Bitcoin’s price has risen from around $4,000 to over $109,000 in Q1 2025. During this period, its total market cap rose above $1.5 trillion.
Moreover, the Bitcoin volatility has moderated over the years as institutions sought exposure, as seen from the Bitcoin ETF inflows into BlackRock and Fidelity spot Bitcoin ETF shares.
While Tesla stock has had its victories, it is struggling, partly due to stiff competition from electric car manufacturers like BYD, Volkswagen, and other legacy automakers. Additionally, there are challenges related to declining sales in China and Europe.

Some investors are concerned, given Elon Musk’s political distractions as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Worse, his endorsement of far-right European political parties and occasionally controversial policy stances have led to a backlash against the Tesla brand.

Protests and boycotts have occurred in the United States. Accordingly, some shareholders want Musk to step down as chair of the board to reduce risks.
