Tron Launching ‘Gas Free’ Feature For USDT Next Week: Best Crypto To Buy During The Dip?

Tron and TRX founder Justin Sun has announced that Tether’s USDT stablecoin will soon feature commission-free transactions on the Tron blockchain.

In an X post today (February 25), Sun said, “Tron’s Gas Free feature supporting USDT gas payments without the need for TRX will launch within the next week.”

Gas Free Initiative Comes After Tron Became One Of The Most Expensive Networks For USDT Transactions

Sun invited teams and wallets that wish to support USDT’s gas-free initiative to contact JustLend DAO, the official lending platform for the Tron blockchain.

Not long ago, Tron was once considered one of the cheapest blockchains for transacting USDT, offering a cost-effective alternative to ERC-20 USDT on Ethereum.

It was regularly under $0.1 to make a USDT transaction on Tron. However, it has become one of the most expensive networks for USDT transfers in recent months.

According to data from Tether’s GasFeesNow page, TRC-20 USDT has the highest gas fees by a huge margin compared to the other major chains. Its fees are currently estimated between $3.22 and $6.54, while ERC-20 USDT fees are $0.19, and BNB chain USDT fees are less than $0.02.

TRC-20 USDT fees work differently from the aforementioned chains. The GassFeesNow page explains, “Gas fees estimation is tricky for the Tron network. TRC20 USDT transfer requires wallet to have “energy” and “bandwidth. “If you are a regular user who sends USDT once or twice per month, chances are your wallet does not have energy.”

Tron USDT Gas Fees Surged Late Last Year – Briefly Going Above $9, Surpassing Ethereum

According to data from Tether via the GasFeesNow page, TRC-20 USDt gas fees surged significantly in late 2024. By December 9, they had peaked above $9 per transaction.

This increase made users complain that Tron was no longer the cheapest option for stablecoin transfers. As a result, the Tron network suffered from a loss in activity due to cheaper options.

The Tron Foundation has been developing gas-free TRC-20 transaction protocols since around July 2024, and Sun had previously planned to introduce the features by the fourth quarter of 2024.

“I believe that similar services will greatly facilitate large companies in deploying stablecoin services on the blockchain, elevating blockchain mass adoption to a new level,” the Tron founder said at the time.
