Ethereum (ETH) founder Vitalik Buterin recently shared on X that the original vision for Layer-2 chains no longer aligns with Ethereum’s evolving needs. Buterin suggests that Layer-2s should focus on specialization rather than simply extending the base layer. Interestingly, this vision could be realized by a scaling solution not on Ethereum, but on Bitcoin (BTC) – specifically, through the development of the fastest Layer-2 on Bitcoin: Bitcoin Hyper (HYPER).

Bitcoin Hyper seems to perfectly embody Buterin’s revised vision. It specializes in “truly extreme levels of scaling” and “ultra-low latency”, thanks to its integration of the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) as its execution layer.

Unlike Layer-2 solutions that rely on multisigs, which Buterin argues fail to meet Ethereum’s original scaling goals, Bitcoin Hyper employs Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Proofs to ensure a trustless environment, utilizing mathematics and cryptography for security.

Early investors are already seeing the power of Bitcoin Hyper’s approach, with $31.2 million raised in initial funding to support the development of this innovative technology.

For new investors, there’s still an opportunity to get in on the action. HYPER tokens are currently priced at $0.0136751 but only for the next 33 hours. After that, the price will increase in the next round.

Vitalik Buterin Declares ‘Branded Shards’ Over

On Tuesday, Buterin posted on X, declaring that the era of Layer-2s as mere “branded shards” of a base chain is over. As Layer-1 networks like Ethereum begin to scale directly through gas limit increases and lower fees, Layer-2s can no longer justify their existence by just providing “extra space.”

According to Buterin, the old definition of scaling has always been about providing large amounts of block space backed by its full security guarantees. Simply creating a high-throughput EVM with a multisig bridge doesn’t count as scaling Ethereum, as it doesn’t preserve the network’s security guarantees.

Instead, he argues Layer-2 must offer specialization to survive. He identified several valid paths for the next generation of infrastructure, such as extreme scaling delivering millions of TPS, ultra-low latency for near-instant sequencing, and trustless security that moves away from human-controlled multisigs toward mathematical certainty via ZK Proofs.

Furthermore, Buterin emphasized maximizing interoperability with Ethereum while accommodating non-EVM chains. He argued that a true Layer-2 solution should be at least Stage 1, meaning it must rely on the Layer-1 for validation rather than just a bridge.

While this puts pressure on generic Ethereum Layer-2s, it is uncanny how perfectly Buterin’s description fits a scaling solution built on Bitcoin: Bitcoin Hyper.

How Bitcoin Hyper Aligns with Vitalik Buterin’s Vision for the Ideal Layer-2 Solution

Bitcoin Hyper is arguably the ideal specialized Layer-2 because its development and architecture align perfectly with the value-add model Buterin is calling for. But, as mentioned, instead of Ethereum, Bitcoin Hyper is building this future on Bitcoin.

Regarding the valid paths Buterin identified, Bitcoin Hyper delivers extreme scaling and ultra-low latency by integrating the SVM. Thanks to the Firedancer upgrade, the current theoretical limit is 1 million TPS, with future hardware-optimized projections suggesting the SVM could eventually scale toward 500 million instructions per second.

Bitcoin Hyper connects this environment to Bitcoin via a canonical bridge, allowing the Layer-2 to inherit Bitcoin’s security. Native BTC is locked in the bridge to mint an SVM-compatible version on the Hyper ecosystem.

Unlike the branded shards Buterin criticized, which often rely on high-throughput EVMs tied to insecure multisigs, Bitcoin Hyper utilizes ZK Proofs. This ensures security is underpinned by cryptography and that the Layer-2 state is always trustlessly validated by the Layer-1.

A recent update from the project emphasizes that Bitcoin’s simplicity adds a specific constraint: it does not execute foreign logic. Therefore, Bitcoin Hyper’s role is to interpret, verify, and anchor cross-network information without requiring Bitcoin to change. This preserves Bitcoin’s core purpose while enabling high-velocity interactions above it.

Overall, Buterin’s message is clear that a Layer-2 must be more than just a sidechain with a bridge. Bitcoin Hyper is moving toward a Stage 1 security model while enabling specialized, non-financial applications through the SVM. In doing so, the project is building the exact kind of Layer-2 ecosystem that Buterin believes is crucial for surviving the market shift in 2026.

Over 1.4B HYPER Tokens Have Been Committed to Long-Term Staking

While Bitcoin Hyper is still in development and research, it presents the perfect opportunity to support Buterin’s vision for an ideal Layer-2 solution.

As stated, with $31.2 million in total funding and momentum showing no signs of slowing, it’s evident that the project has garnered substantial early investor interest.

In fact, a large portion of these investors are aligned with the project’s long-term objectives, as 1.4 billion HYPER tokens, or approximately 61.36% of the tokens purchased during presale at their current price, have been committed to long-term staking.

That native currency of the Layer-2 investors have been flocking to is the second component of Bitcoin Hyper’s dual-coin ecosystem. With the wrapped BTC as the main medium of exchange across the hybrid applications that can be built on Bitcoin Hyper, HYPER – the Layer-2 token – ensures transaction processing and is the primary currency for gas fees.

Moreover, HYPER serves a crucial role in securing the network, acting as the staking asset, and soon, it will enable token holders to participate in governance decisions, allowing them to vote on key protocol changes.

How to Buy HYPER Tokens

To get HYPER tokens, visit the Bitcoin Hyper website and buy using SOL, ETH, USDT, USDC, BNB, or even a credit card.
