PayPal has more than 400 million account holders worldwide, but using it to buy cryptocurrency on a third-party platform has remained surprisingly difficult. Most exchanges still don’t offer it. ChangeHero is changing that: its upcoming fiat widget upgrade adds MoonPay as a new payment provider and, with it, PayPal as a supported checkout option.
The update is broader than a single provider addition. Beyond PayPal, it adds GBP bank transfer for UK users, expands the purchasable asset list by roughly 80 tokens to over 150 in total, and launches the cashback program, MoonPay Balance and Mercuryo Boost, for repeat buyers.
MoonPay Brings PayPal to the Checkout
MoonPay is a licensed fiat-to-crypto payments provider: a company that manages compliance, currency conversion, and transaction settlement so users can pay with traditional money and receive crypto. Its addition to ChangeHero’s provider network matters for one reason: MoonPay’s stack includes PayPal.
PayPal is standard across e-commerce but uncommon as a payment method for on-ramping to crypto. Investors who receive income through PayPal – freelance contracts, marketplace sales, peer-to-peer transfers – have had no way to use that balance as a direct payment method on a crypto platform. The workaround: withdraw to a bank account, then fund a purchase separately. ChangeHero’s integration removes that step.
MoonPay joins Mercuryo and FinchPay on the platform. Users selecting a payment provider at checkout will now see all three, with MoonPay options including PayPal displayed alongside card and bank transfer alternatives from the existing providers.
Does ChangeHero Support PayPal?
Yes. After the widget update goes live at changehero.io, PayPal will be available as a purchase option through MoonPay’s integration. No ChangeHero account is required to use it, consistent with the platform’s approach of keeping on-ramp friction low.
GBP Bank Transfer: A Direct Line for UK Buyers
UK buyers have been missing a direct way to purchase crypto in sterling on ChangeHero. That changes with this release. GBP bank transfer joins the checkout as a dedicated option for British users, the first time ChangeHero has supported sterling-denominated transfers in a localised UK flow.
Most crypto platforms don’t support GBP natively, leaving UK buyers to either pay by card or convert sterling to EUR or USD before a purchase — both options add cost and friction. ChangeHero’s GBP bank transfer removes both. Faster Payments (the UK’s real-time bank transfer network) already makes account-to-account transfers routine for British retail investors; the update meets users in the payment environment they already use.
Together with PayPal, GBP bank transfer makes clear that this update is as much about removing geographic barriers as it is about adding features.
What Loyalty Programs Come With the Update?
Two, running through separate providers.
MoonPay Balance is a pre-funding feature within the MoonPay ecosystem. Users who deposit in advance receive three direct benefits:
- Faster transaction processing
- Higher payment success rate
- 0% provider fee per transaction
That 0% applies to MoonPay’s platform charge. Blockchain network fees (the on-chain costs of any crypto transfer) still apply, so pre-funding isn’t free end-to-end. For buyers who plan purchases in advance, the discounted provider fees add up.
Mercuryo Boost works differently. It’s a points-based cashback program for ChangeHero users who select Mercuryo at checkout. Each qualifying purchase earns Boost Points that can later reduce transaction fees or be exchanged for cryptocurrency once a qualifying balance is reached. There’s no separate enrollment step; choosing Mercuryo at changehero.io is enough to start accumulating points. The effective return varies by geography, payment method, and transaction size, so frequent buyers in supported markets benefit more than occasional ones.
The table below summarises how the two programs differ in structure:
| MoonPay Balance | Mercuryo Boost | |
| Type | Pre-funded account balance | Points-based cashback |
| How to activate | Deposit funds in advance via MoonPay | Select Mercuryo at ChangeHero checkout |
| Fee impact | 0% provider fee per transaction | Boost Points reduce future fees |
| Payout timing | Savings apply immediately at purchase | Redeem once qualifying balance is reached |
| Network fees | Still apply | Still apply |
| Rate variability | Fixed benefit structure | Varies by country, payment method, and amount |
A Cleaner Purchase Flow
The checkout interface has been rebuilt alongside the expanded provider list. Before selecting a provider, buyers can now filter by country of residence and preferred payment method, in addition to currency pair and transaction amount, which were already available.
With three providers and multiple payment methods in play, the unfiltered view can surface options that simply won’t work for a given buyer’s location or payment preference. Filtering solves that right before the purchase attempt.
The purchasable asset list has expanded as part of the same release. Roughly 80 tokens have been added to the fiat widget, bringing the total up to 170 cryptocurrencies available for direct purchase with traditional payment methods. That sits alongside ChangeHero’s crypto-to-crypto swap capability, which covers more than 350 assets and runs without mandatory registration or KYC for swaps.
FinchPay allows purchases below approximately €700 (around $800) without identity verification. Mercuryo applies a simplified verification process; MoonPay follows standard verification requirements. Purchases under $300 qualify for expedited settlement.
What the Update Signals About ChangeHero’s Strategy
The release isn’t a single provider addition. Each component does something different: MoonPay unlocks PayPal; GBP bank transfer fills a regional gap; the loyalty programs give buyers a worthwhile reason to return; the asset expansion makes the widget more useful for those who stay.
ChangeHero operates as a non-custodial exchange, which means the platform holds no user funds. After a swap, the assets go directly to the buyer’s own wallet; there is no ChangeHero balance to withdraw from. The exchange collapses of 2022 put custody risk front of mind for retail investors, and ChangeHero’s architecture is built around avoiding this risk. The platform has served more than 3 million users across 180+ countries since 2018.
For US investors with existing PayPal balances, the integration is a direct path into crypto. For UK buyers who would otherwise need to convert sterling or pay card fees, GBP bank transfer does the same job. Both remove a barrier that existed before a user even reached the asset selection screen.
