Top 25 Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency Websites Worldwide

36

Today’s post is a short one. It’s more of a list than an actual post. Due to the recent surge in Bitcoin’s price I decided to review what are the top 25 sites worldwide dealing with Bitcoin.

I ranked the sites according to the amount of traffic they receive each month. I’ve used the Alexa ranking algorithm for this purpose and Theme Punch’s list of the top 1million sites. Here are the results:

When picking out the sites for the list I faced a problem. Many sites are also dedicated to currencies other than Bitcoin so I didn’t know who actually qualifies to make the cut.

In the end I decided to include all sites that aren’t altcoins exchanges, ad networks or market data sites. While these sites do get a large amount of traffic most of it comes from 3rd parties using their services and APIs. Here are the sites that I’ve excluded ordered by size (largest first):

  • Poloniex
  • Bittrex
  • CoinMarketCap
  • CryptoCompare
  • CoinTraffic
  • MyPayingCryptoAds
  • CoinGecko
  • CryptoWat.ch

Some key insights from the results

  • Poloniex is the largest exchange around (bigger than Coinbase, although not on the Bitcoin list)
  • Coinbase is the largest Bitcoin exchange and wallet provider
  • Bitcoin.com (owned by Roger Ver) is now larger than the official Bitcoin.org site
  • FreeBitco.in is the largest Bitcoin faucet and the 3rd Bitcoin site in size worldwide
  • 99Bitcoins is the 24th largest Bitcoin site around. RESPECT!

Things that have changed in the past 2 years

On July 2015 I’ve made a similar post for Bitcoinist (the post has since been moved to Bitcoin.com). That list had only 9 sites but the differences are apparent. Here are the main things that have changed:

  • Coinbase outgrew Blockchain.info (went from #4 to #1)
  • BTC-E’s popularity is diminishing (went from #5 to #10)
  • There’s a considerable smaller amount of faucets in this list than there were 2 years ago. This is mainly due to the fact that Bitcoin’s price and the high transaction fees are making it very expensive to run a faucet.
  • 99Bitcoins wasn’t even close to getting on the list :)

Keep in mind that rankings change daily so when you view this list the ranking may no longer be accurate. That’s why I added a link next to each site for its Alexa ranking. Also, if you think I’ve left a site out please let me know in the comment section below to I can update the list. TO THE MOON!!!

  1. Hey, how much does it cost to submit a featured story on your site? Also, what is the turnaround time (from submission to actually being live on site) ? Anticipate hearing from you. Hope this finds you well..

      Of course :)

Thanks for noticing…will fix this ASAP (I did write it in 4 in the morning to my defense).

Congrats on how far you’ve come. I’ve been with you for over a year now and I link to your site whenever possible. You guided me through running my own faucet. You’ve also indirectly helped me to structure my websites. You gave me my first.. Well second amount of Bitcoin and guided me through getting rid of my faucet. You are a staple in this community. You also gave my new boss, who is now a very prominent figure in the community, his first Satoshi as well. I asked him if he knew you the first time we talked because you have identical accents. Thanks again Ofir for everything you do. I might not be where I am if it weren’t for your “How to make your own faucet” video over a year ago.

Unfortunately there’s no legit site that for investing in Bitcoin that we can recomment at the moment. If you do however encounter an investing site make sure to run it through the Bitcoin scam test to make sure it’s not a scam. You can find it here: https://99bitcoins.com/bitcoin-scam-test/

    • it depends on what you want. you can invest in bitcoin by mining it, trading or holding. do a simple google search about it. you can trade bitcoin through bittrex.com and other ex-changers and check the market cap on coinsrex.com or coinmarketcap.com

I personally think that you and your team are doing a very excellent job at putting information about crypto currencies in all areas out there together on one site. But what really amazes me is the ignorance of people like Tom who feel the need to add their negativity towards a group of people with the passion of trying to keep people informed about the goings about of digital currencies in all areas. My hat is off to you wonderful people who at least are trying to help others become knowledged about this revolutinary new field. Keep up the awesome work 99bitcoins.

Thanks for the article, Ofir. I have been looking for something like this. I wonder where the more popular subreddits (for example, /r/Bitcoin and /r/BitcoinMarkets) would rank on this list?

    • Ofir Beigel on

It’s hard to say since the Reddit domain is ranked only for the top level domain and not the subreddits.

  8. Andrew Harrabin on

I have visited quite a few of them sites myself and i use coinbase so it is good to know they have a top rating, the industry of crypto currency is constant changing and growing i look forwards to see how the future changes with it.

  9. Hi, thanks for the article. It would be interesting if somehow a list like this could be compiled with regards to customer service. There is no way Coinbase would be top of that list. I know they are huge & clearly have big plans for the future having recently put out a call for $1Billion new investment ( in tranches of $100 Million minimum ). I use them myself & when the site is working properly they do provide a good service, however, using Coinbase from the UK at least, its about 50/50 if a purchase will complete due to their dreadful Credit / Debit card processing. Some days it works, next day it probably will not. You would think a company of this size would be able to employ some decent programmers to get this problem sorted once & for all.

  10. Hi ZSOFIA, I subscribed to the super VIP status with you guys but I have not seen any change in my status. I don’t know if can provide the details of my payment to you here? I will appreciate if you can assist me.

    Thank you.

    • Ofir Beigel on

      Hi Adetola,
I’m not sure what you are referring to as we don’t take payment from our readers and don’t have any super VIP status. Perhaps you are referring to a different website?

  11. I got nothing out of this article. Why not actually use the data to abstract something insightful instead of just pasting a table of current values for one point? Meh.

    • Zsofia - 99Bitcoins support on

Hi Tom, it is sad you do not find this data useful as the table shows some valuable information about how popular the crytocurrency economy as a whole. Are you looking for something specific? We might be able to help you.

    • Why’d you read the article then? The article is exactly what it said it is. The only disagreement I have with it is removing Polo, Trex, and CMC from the list.

Thanks, Ofir, I’ve been a subscriber for a very long time and am always impressed by the detailed information you put out. I have found your posts very useful.

      • Earnie Rhyker on

I found a pretty useful; great recap of prior posts that I didn’t know about yet either.
