Jesse Pollak, the creator of the Ethereum Layer-2 blockchain Base, announced yesterday (September 30) that he is officially moving into a Coinbase executive role while also taking the lead on the Coinbase Wallet.

Pollak made it clear that he will continue to oversee the Base team and Base’s close relationship with Coinbase Wallet will accelerate the two organisations’ common goal of “bringing a billion people and a million builders on-chain”.

The move will also see the Base creator becoming the eighth member of Coinbase’s executive team, joining notable people such as Brian Armstrong (Coinbase co-founder) and its Chief Legal Officer, Paul Grewal.
Speaking of Grewal, he congratulated Pollak with a funny quip assuming the Base creator was already on the exec team. He said, “Wait you weren’t already on Exec?!? 🙂 Honestly from your longstanding impact and leadership I wouldn’t have been able to say otherwise @jessepollak”.

Many in the space believe Pollak’s work on Base, and now Coinbase Wallet will take the on-chain experience to new levels via next-level UX, something that has long been missing.
Web3 dev, AlexMasmej is one of many echoing this sentiment. He replied to Pollak’s announcement, saying, “BASE & COINBASE ARE VERTICALIZING! Bullish for base UX. Drakulaapp drops an app tomorrow on the App Store that’s using Coinbase Smart Wallet. The experience will only improve from there. Pollak has reiterated that although Base has such a strong connection with Coinbase Wallet, it would continue to serve the entire blockchain ecosystem. The ultimate goal is to bring billions on-chain, therefore Pollak plans to ensure that all major networks are supported.

The newly appointed Coinbase exec did start out working directly for the US-based exchange in a consumer and retail engineering role from January 2018 to September 2021. Pollak also assisted with the development of Coinbase Pro and Coinbase Wallet, before moving on to create Base.
Base has become one of the most used Ethereum layer 2s since it launched in August 2023, reaching 4 million active addresses in mid-October. It also recently crossed another huge milestone, having processed over $100 billion in cumulative volume on the network, per DefiLlama.
