Streaming behemoth Netflix has announced plans to use generative AI to launch interactive adverts to subscribers in the middle of streaming on the platform.
According to an industry report from Media Play News, Netflix plans to deploy generative AI across its midroll while pausing current ad formats, beginning in 2026.

“Creative” Artificial Intelligence Ads Coming To Netflix Next Year
Netflix launched its in-house ad platform earlier this year, said it was working towards more “creative” ads from its in-house team, thanks to the use of new ad tech that it is still working on.
Mainstream publications have reported that the new ad product will use generative AI to associate advertiser copy and adverts with relevant programming across its services.
The ads will only be seen by subscribers of the streamers cheapest subscription, which uses an ad-supported model that launched in 2022. Per the Netflix Q4 2024 earnings report, there are currently 94 million subscribers at this level worldwide. In total, there are over 300 million subscribers to the Netflix platform.
The President of Advertising at Netflix, Amy Reinhard, stated in a recent statement that Netflix subscribers “pay as much attention to midroll ads as they do to the shows and movies themselves.”

She went on to say that the streaming service has “the most engaged audience anywhere,” with ad-supported subscribers spending an average of 41 hours a month on the platform.
Netflix has already ventured into the world of generative AI. At the beginning of May, the streamer announced a partnership with Sam Altman’s OpenAI to develop an AI-powered search feature that will enable viewers to request personalized recommendations using natural language.
