Powell stuck to the Fed’s script: no politics, just data. “Uncertainty shocks” and global modeling dominated his speech, but the real intrigue came days earlier, when he met with Trump at the White House. According to Powell, the economy was discussed, but not the rates.
“We make decisions based solely on objective analysis,” he told the president.
That claim, of course, did little to quiet concerns over the Fed’s independence. Powell later told reporters he’d never request a presidential meeting—”It always comes the other way.”
