NBA superstar Kevin Durant’s Bitcoin fortune has been locked away for years and it may be the best investment mistake he’s ever made – if he can ever unlock it.
Speaking at CNBC’s Game Plan conference this week, Durant’s business partner and agent Rich Kleiman revealed that the world famous Houston Rockets forward has been unable to access his Coinbase account “for a few years” due to a password error.
Yup, you heard that right, the NBA billionaire has lost his Coinbase password.
“We’ve yet to be able to track down his Coinbase account info, so we’ve never sold anything, and this Bitcoin is just through the roof,” Kleiman said. “It’s only benefited us.”
Fortune Favors the Forgetful: Durant’s 2016 Bitcoin Bet
Durant began buying Bitcoin in 2016 while playing for the Golden State Warriors. According to CoinGecko data, the cryptocurrency traded between $360 and $1,000 at the time.
Bitcoin price has since surged to nearly $118,000, representing gains of over 11,000% from Durant’s entry window.
The position’s current size is unknown, but even a relatively modest buy, say $100,000 worth, would now be worth a jaw-dropping $11M.
Kleiman recounted that the investment began after a dinner with Team USA teammates, where “Bitcoin” was mentioned “25 times in one evening.” The next day, Durant and Kleiman began allocating capital to crypto.

Is This the Ultimate HODL Strategy: Durant is Locked Out But Hodling Strong
Durant’s lost password has effectively forced him into a long-term hold strategy. While many early investors trimmed or sold during the 2017 and 2021 peaks, Durant’s holdings have sat untouched through multiple boom-and-bust cycles.
Coinbase confirmed to CNBC that standard self-service password resets are available, alongside a 24/7 support desk.
But Kleiman noted that while they’ve been in contact with Coinbase about recovery, the issue remains unresolved.
Ironically, this “user error” has insulated Durant from the temptation to take profits early, a common fate for many retail and institutional investors who cashed out before Bitcoin’s parabolic runs (and a comforting thought for those of us that failed to get in early).

Can Kevin Leverage His Investor Status? Durant’s Broader Coinbase Bet
The locked Bitcoin isn’t Durant’s only exposure to the exchange. Through his venture firm Thirty Five Ventures, Durant was an early investor in Coinbase’s 2017 Series D funding round.
Coinbase’s valuation has since multiplied 53-fold, making his stake one of the most lucrative deals in his investment portfolio.
The partnership has extended beyond equity. In 2021, Thirty Five Ventures signed a multi-year promotional agreement with Coinbase, producing crypto-focused content for Durant’s sports and entertainment site, Boardroom.

Bitcoin Hyper Presale: The Set-and-Forget Play for the Next Decade
When NBA legend Kevin Durant lost access to his Bitcoin wallet, it became one of the best “mistakes” in investing history. Unable to sell, he held through every crash, and watched his 2016 buys at $360–$1,000 soar more than 11,000% to today’s $116,000 Bitcoin.
That’s the power of long-term conviction. And it’s exactly the kind of opportunity Bitcoin Hyper (HYPER) represents right now.
HYPER is Bitcoin’s fastest Layer-2, built with the Solana Virtual Machine to make Bitcoin programmable at scale.
Every dApp, stablecoin, lending protocol, and game deployed on Bitcoin Hyper will need HYPER to function. In other words, it’s the fuel for Bitcoin’s long-overdue DeFi economy.
At today’s presale price of just $0.012935, HYPER sits at a modest $272M valuation, tiny compared to Ethereum’s Layer-2 leaders like Mantle ($5.5B), Arbitrum ($2.7B), or Optimism ($1.4B). If Bitcoin Hyper captures even a fraction of BTC’s $1T+ market, the upside potential is enormous.
This is the type of token you buy, stake, and forget, letting time and adoption do the heavy lifting. Don’t wait until exchange listings make HYPER the play everyone wishes they had bought earlier.
HYPER can be purchased directly through the Bitcoin Hyper website using SOL, ETH, USDT, USDC, BNB, or even a credit card.
The Bitcoin Hyper team recommends using a Web3 wallet like Best Wallet, one of the best crypto and Bitcoin wallets in the market. HYPER is already listed under Best Wallet’s “Upcoming Tokens” – making it easy to buy, track, and claim once live.
