Zhao was arrested and had to go to prison for four months in April 2024. This was roughly 15 months after FTX, the exchange, went under, sinking with billions of investor funds.
The collapse of FTX was a turning point in crypto and forced authorities in the United States to act. Charges were pressed against CZ and Binance. As part of the plea deal, the Binance co-founder had to pay $50M and serve a four-month prison term. The mega exchange also had to pay over $4.2Bn as a penalty.
Under Donald Trump, however, and timely, after Biden and Gary Gensler were forced out, a new crypto-friendly era in the United States began. Trump is pro-crypto, and over the past few months, YZi Labs, formerly Binance Labs, and Binance have backed or facilitated close ties with crypto businesses linked to the first family.
To illustrate, Binance accepted a $2Bn investment from the MGX Fund using USD1, the stablecoin founded by the Trump family. Later, YZi Labs backed Hemi, the Bitcoin layer-2 blockchain, and partnered with Dominari Securities by Dominari Holdings where Eric and Don Jr. serve as advisors.
