what if I wanted to try mining a coin solo, how would I go about setting that up?

Hi Jacob,
 
For most coins which have any significant market value, solo mining will prove impractical unless you have serious mining power. The exact process will depend on the coin you’re mining.
 
If you want to try it out, it’s mostly a question of hooking up your miner software and your full node wallet. Here is a guide to doing this (although it may be a little outdated, as people haven’t really been doing solo mining for years now):
