Encrypted Private Key

Holly Gregar asked 4 weeks ago

I would like to know how to change my encrypted private key(BIP38) on my cold paper wallet to unencrypted, (WIF format) so that I can deposit my BTC into my blockchain wallet and purchase on Shapeshift.io. I should never have encrypted it at bitaddress.org when I made the wallet. I do have the password. One source says to use the “validate” feature on the generator to extract the WIF key but doesn’t say how to do this. Thank you for any help you can give me. Holly

Hi Holly,
I believe that you can unencrypt it by the wallet details tab of bitaddress.org – I suggest that you do this is an a safe manner, as per our guide to paper wallet creation.
I would then sweep (not import) the unencrypted private key into a personal software wallet, like Electrum. Keeping your coins on BC.I is going from high to low security, whereas a good software is at least medium security (or high if used in combo with a hardware wallet). BC.I / Shapeshift don’t give you the best rates on trades either so I’d recommend using a dedicated exchange instead.
