This is the second time Trump has promised to pardon Ross Ulbricht if elected President after a similar claim back in May

#FreeRoss: Former President Donald Trump declared yesterday (October 2) that he will ‘save’ Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. This has re-ignited the hotly debated topic of Ulbricht as he enters his 12th year behind bars.

Yesterday, Trump declared on his Truth Social platform, “I WILL SAVE ROSS ULBRICHT!”.

This has sparked renewed interest in the Silk Road founder’s story and its close ties to the early days of Bitcoin – as the #FreeRoss movement continues to gain momentum.

Trump’s Most Recent Call To Pardon Ross Ulbricht Comes After His Initial Pledge To The Silk Road Founder Back In May

Silk Road was a black market platform created by Ross Ulbricht and was a primary use case for Bitcoin in the early days. The notoriety of the marketplace was arguably the thing to initially shine a spotlight on Bitcoin, and not in a good way.

It has always divided opinions and it took over a decade for Bitcoin to finally start shedding its reputation as only being used for illicit activities. It has since been vindicated and this year saw the groundbreaking launch of Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) listings with multiple billion-dollar asset managers in the US.

Is Trump’s Promise To Ross Ulbricht Genuine Or A Tool To Garner Votes?

This isn’t Trump’s first show of support for Ulbricht. Back in May of this year, the Republican Presidential nominee told attendees at the Libertarian National Convention that he would commute Ulbricht’s life sentence on day one if re-elected. This huge claim was met with an outpouring of cheers from the crowd, some who were holding “Free Ross” signs aloft.

Ulbricht, who has some access to electronics behind bars, responded to Trumps promise. On May 26, he tweeted “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you… After 11 years in prison, it is hard to express how I feel at this moment.”

Many are sceptical of Trump’s vow to pardon Ulbricht, claiming that he is using Ross’ name to curry favor with pro-crypto and libertarian-minded voters for his ongoing presidential campaign.

#FreeRoss: History Of Ulbricht And Silk Road

Silk Road launched way back in 2011. It was ‘darknet’ marketplace that used Bitcoin as its primary currency to enable anonymous transactions. Those transactions were primarily for illegal goods and services.

The Silk Road marketplace was responsible for putting Bitcoin on peoples radars in those early days, both positively and negatively. It was revolutionary at the time as a means for decentralised payments. On the other hand, it quickly gained a bad reputation as being a currency mostly used to fund illicit activities.

Back then, Ross Ulbricht operated under the pseudonym “Dread Pirate Roberts” on the platform. After two years of the marketplace being live, he was arrested. In 2013, in a raid conducted by the FBI, Ulbricht had his laptop seized and was swiftly sentenced to two life terms plus 40 years in 2015.

Ross’ most recent musings came on X at the start of this month where he said “Here it is. The start of my 12th year in prison today. I intend to make the most of it and use my time wisely.”

If Donald Trump wins the upcoming election next month, many will be watching closely when he is sworn into office in January to see if he fulfils his promise to pardon Ross Ulbricht.
