Does Donald Trump really care about crypto, or is it all smoke?

Think about it. The five most popular people in crypto are all billionaires: Larry Fink, Michael Saylor, Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and the wild card, Nayib Bukele.

While it’s believed that most of that list is genuinely pro-crypto—for a mixture of selfless and selfish reasons—Donald Trump is the X factor. So, does the 45th and most likely future presidents care about crypto?

Does Donald Trumpy Care About Crypto? The Real Answer: Probably Not

Ex-President Trump recently called to produce all Bitcoin within the U.S., sparking a fiery debate in the crypto world. While a few initially cheered, experts soon slammed the idea, underscoring his lack of grasp on Bitcoin’s decentralization.

Others argue he literally has zero clue about Bitcoin and is posturing to crypto bros.

Crypto journalist Laura Shin was quick to question the enthusiasm around Trump’s statement, highlighting potential risks:

“This could create jurisdictional risk, making Bitcoin less decentralized and more vulnerable to attacks,” she observed.

Margot Paez, a Bitcoin advocate and sustainability consultant, echoed Shin’s concerns:

“We do not want hashrate centralization in the US. This should be obvious. Please get it together,” Paez emphasized.

You have to hand it to Trump, though. He really is America first, even when it comes to crypto. He wants Americans to discover the remaining Bitcoin. It’s just that that phrasing doesn’t have the same ring as “made in the USA.”

Geopolitical Implications on Donald Trump’s Bitcoin Stance

Trump’s comments stirred varied responses from some of the top voices in crypto. Galaxy Digital’s Alex Thorn suggested it could be a geopolitical move.

“There’s a view that competition will accelerate, ultimately accelerating and entrenching global adoption. If your geopolitical adversaries (or allies, for that matter) think it’s important, you must also play the game or risk falling behind,” he argued.

Trump’s sudden capricious crypto advocacy—protecting self-custody and embracing crypto donations—starkly opposes his 2019 Bitcoin stance:

“I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. They are not money, and their value is highly volatile and based on thin air.”

Since then, Donald Trump released 45,000+ NFTS of himself wearing Halloween costumes on Ethereum, and his wife, Melania Trump, released NFTs on Solana.

In many ways, Trump is riding the crypto hype to placate investors. Gun to his head he probably doesn’t care much. But as Dave Chappelle once said, “he’s an honest liar.”

Even if Trump doesn’t 100 percent believe in Bitcoin or crypto he does want to make sure America leads in it. And given the choices for president, he’s likely our best option.
