The first day of 2025 turned explosive in Las Vegas when a Tesla Cybertruck combusted outside the Trump International Hotel

The first day of 2025 turned combustive in Las Vegas when a Tesla ($TSLA) Cybertruck exploded from a terrorist attack outside the Trump International Hotel at 8:40 a.m.

The incident lit up debates over Tesla’s safety record, despite the car shielding the attack, and its potential consequences on the wider automotive landscape.

The real question, however, is who puts things like that in their truck??

Details of the Cybertruck Explosion

The driver of the Cybertruck has been identified as 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, a former Army vet from Colorado Springs. Authorities believe Livelsberger died in the explosion, though verification is still pending.

Seven others walked away with minor injuries and were treated on-site, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated.

The blast, which erupted outside the Trump International Hotel, seems to have been triggered by a stash of fireworks and possibly a bomb loaded in the truck’s bed. Elon Musk quickly took to Twitter to clarify that this was no fault of Tesla’s electric drivetrain.

Sheriff McMahill praised the Cybertruck’s durability, stating, “Cybertruck actually contained the explosion and directed the blast upwards.”

Connections to Broader Security Concerns For Trump and Musk

The Las Vegas blast unfolded just hours after chaos erupted in New Orleans, where a truck rammed through a crowd, leaving 15 dead. Sheriff McMahill acknowledged the eerie timing but stopped short of linking the two events.

A curious twist has surfaced—both Matthew Livelsberger, tied to the Vegas explosion, and Shamsud Din Jabbar, the New Orleans suspect, shared history at the same military base. The FBI and ATF are digging deeper, possibly targeting residences tied to the cases.

Tesla’s Cybertruck, marketed as a machine of the future, is now in a very different conversation.

The fact that this rental, sourced through Turo in Colorado, ended up in such an incident won’t go unnoticed. It might ignite debates about the oversight in vehicle rentals, potentially paving the way for new safety protocols.

The Trump-Musk Connection

The blast’s proximity to the Trump International Hotel and Tesla’s unmistakable imprint have turned this into a viral story. The ties between President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk—Tesla’s mercurial CEO and the soon-to-be Department of Government Efficiency co-leader—add layers of political intrigue.

DOGE, which aims to trim trillions in spending, now finds itself tangentially linked to an explosion that Sheriff McMahill calls “highly symbolic.”

Whether this represents a wider threat or just bizarre timing remains to be seen. Wall Street traders, fresh from Tesla’s massive 2024 rally, are watching closely as the company starts the year with a subtle market wobble.
