There’s a new star in Bitcoin town: a prepaid credit MasterCard funded with… Bitcoins!
Don’t get too happy, though, because this is not the same as having a card that lets you transmit Bitcoins during transactions. The Bitcoin Card’s primary function is to hold Euros. “The card works as a normal prepaid MasterCard, the difference is users can buy it with Bitcoins and fund it with Bitcoins“, explains a representative of the company that manages the card.
However, the card features are quite unsure for now, since the website doesn’t clearly state what currency the card uses. There is information on the web page that suggests the possibility of different currencies, at least according to the FAQ, which are only available to users with an account.
As stated by the website, you only have to follow two simple steps to get your card. First, sign up and then order it. But if you want to order a card – which also has the option to transfer funds via SMS -, you’ll have to pay an initial fee of €58.55 (that’s about £50 or $78.15).
As for The Bitcoin Company, the website’s history is very recent, since the company was only set up in March of this year. Yet, the members of this team apparently have a large experience in the fields of prepaid credit cards, payment processing and virtual currencies.
