Coinado Enables 100% Anonymous Torrents Via Tor

0

Torrenting is an activity that many people take part in. Repercussions rarely crop up, but for those who are afraid they might: Coinado has you covered. This newly released service provides you with 100% anonymity when Torrenting a file.

But how does it work?

Tranquil torrenting with Coinado

Coinado downloads any public torrrent file and streams it to you via the Tor network. The service runs on the command line, and all it requires from you is the info hash of the torrent and a payment in Bitcoin.

Not only does this provide you with peace of mind, but it also contributes to the health of the Tor network, as for each Gigabyte of data that Coinado transfers through Tor, it commits 10 Gigabytes of bandwidth back to the network.
According to the BitcoinTalk thread, it also “seeds every downloaded torrent to a ratio of 2 or up to 12 hours,” making you a good BitTorrent citizen.

The service charges 0.10 USD/GiB (Gibibyte), payable exclusively in Bitcoin. Coinado have generously made the service free of charge for the first few days of its launch, however, so you can give it a spin before devoting any money to it.

Unfortunately, though, there is a downside. Streaming via Tor likely leads to much slower download times:

It is of course slower than a direct download. Depending on the size of the file, it might be fast enough to stream though, so you can already start watching something while it is still downloading. The upside is, that you get true privacy.

Though significantly annoying (let’s face it, we all hate slow downloads), it seems a small price to pay for complete anonymity:

If there ever is a crack down on filesharing via VPN, the popular ones will probably just be overtaken by law enforcement behind the scenes and operated by them for a while while they collect all the data they need. Coinado on the other hand is torrenting for the paranoid.
