Identifying BCN eligible for BCH on Coinbase

Bitcoin Questions and AnswersCategory: General questionsIdentifying BCN eligible for BCH on Coinbase

Robert asked 1 year ago

Would like to transfer contents of Coinbase wallet to hardware wallet as recommended, but only a portion of  my BCN were bought pre-fork and need to be left behind at Coinbase for January allocation of BCH. How do I transfer out only post-fork BCN so as not to lose BCH award in January.  Thanks, Rob

Hey Robert,
According to Coinbase\’s FAQ on Bitcoin Cash, any bitcoins held in your Coinbase account at the time of the fork will be credited with a corresponding amount of Bcash – even if you withdraw / withdrew those bitcoins before January 2018.
In other words, there\’s no need (or way, as far as I know) to withdraw only post-fork BTC – but it doesn\’t matter. Any BTC you had on Coinbase at the time of the fork will be credited with BCH by Coinbase on the 1st day of 2018.

Thanks for the prompt reply Steven. So if I understand correctly, even if my Coinbase wallet is empty, on Jan 1st 2018 BCH will appear in my wallet corresponding to the amount of BTC present pre-fork, therefore I need not worry about losing BCH if I transfer all Coinbase BCT to a hardware wallet now?

Hi Robert,
That’s my understanding, yes. I suggest that you verify this with Coinbase support for peace of mind, but their FAQ on the issue seems clear.
