buying ripple on Bitstamp

i have my Coinbase accnt and an accnt on Bitstamp. Bitstamp was recommended on this blog.  i have some USD cash in Coinbase and want to use that to buy Ripple on Bitstamp. i’ve got brain fog/lock now as how to do this.
do i transfer some cash from Coinbase to Bitstamp or what?

Hi Tia,
 
Well, most exchanges only let you withdraw fiat to a bank account which you own – in other words, Coinbase probably won’t allow you to withdraw your USD to BitStamp’s deposit account.
 
What I suggest you do is buy Bitcoin on Coinbase and then transfer the BTC to Bitstamp’s Bitcoin Deposit address. The BTC will then arrive on BitStamp.net and you may then use it to purchase Ripple.

i can wrap my head around that suggestion. as a newbie, buying/selling crypto still seems a bit convoluted. you folks here sure help out a lot to navigate all this.
